What is High Functioning Anxiety? (a therapist explains!)
You're getting things done. You show up. You deliver.
You’re kinda crushing it ;)
So why does it still feel like you're one task from falling apart?
One of the most common things I hear when women first reach out: "I don't even know why I'm struggling - my life is good and I should be fine."
That my friend, is high-functioning anxiety. And it doesn't care how good things look on paper.
What is High Functioning Anxiety?
High-functioning anxiety isn't a clinical diagnosis - it's more like an experience. One that's easy to miss because the person living it looks totally fine from the outside.
You on the outside: capable, reliable, getting it done.
You on the inside: overthinking, over-apologizing, running on fumes.
A lot of women with high-functioning anxiety are detail-oriented, loyal, and incredibly driven.
But those same traits? They’re also fueled by a nervous system that is on overdrive All. The. Time.
Signs of High-Functioning Anxiety
These signs might not look like what most people picture when they think "anxiety."
You can't turn your brain off… even when you're exhausted - that "wired but tired" feeling
You rewrite texts and emails multiple times so you don't come across as rude or ungrateful
You say ‘yes’ because the idea of disappointing someone feels absolutely terrible
You wake up at 3am replaying conversations - sometimes from last week, sometimes from 17 years ago
You're the most reliable person in the room... and somehow also the person no one ever checks on
Every time you try to relax, the voice in the back of your head says you “should be doing something”
Sound familiar? No, you’re not imagining it…
Why HFA Goes Unnoticed
Because you're functioning and doing alright, nobody clocks it.
You're reliable. Thorough. The one people can always count on.
The anxiety you feel just gets called "meticulous & such a great work ethic."
According to the American Psychiatric Association's 2024 annual poll, 43% of adults feel more anxious than the year before - but only 1 in 4 talked to a mental health professional. That empty space where people are falling through the cracks or not seeking help for whatever reason is where high-functioning anxiety lives.
Quick note from me: You don't have to be falling apart or in complete crisis to ask for support.
What Happens If You Ignore It
High-functioning anxiety doesn't just level out naturally.
It’ll actually continue to build - into burnout, physical symptoms (jaw clenching, sleep issues, constant digestive upset), and relationships that start to feel strained because you’re maybe feeling resentful for always have to be “on.”
The women I work with who waited the longest almost always say the same thing: "I wish I hadn't waited so long."
What Can Help High Functioning Anxiety
Therapy for high-functioning anxiety isn't lying on a couch talking about your feelings forever.
It's practical.
It's learning to recognize your patterns in real time and building tools that work in your real life.
The goal isn't to stop being ambitious. It's to stop being so dang exhausted all the time.
